Corn Dolly

I would have thought a corn dolly would look more like a doll...

This is a corn dolly from St. Jacobs.

  2. Well Anonymous...I'm glad you asked.

The corn dolly is an ancient craft made of straw after the harvest. The spirit of the corn was believed to live in the crop and was left homeless after the harvest. The corn dolly, or idol, was made to house the spirit during the winter. It was then ploughed into the soil the following year.

Corn dollies today are hung as decorative pieces but trace their roots back to the ancient art.
